California's New Laws for 2024

Insights from a California Attorney.

Los Angeles, California.

As we step into a new year, California introduces several changes to state laws that are set to impact our daily lives. Let's break down these important updates that aim to make a positive difference for everyone:

1. Minimum Wage Increase

  • Good news for workers! The state minimum wage is getting a boost to $16 per hour. Keep in mind that some cities and counties might have an even higher local minimum wage.

2. Transparency in Police Stops

  • Police stops are getting a bit more transparent. Now, officers will have to explain why they pulled someone over, unless there's a threat to life or property. This change aims to improve communication during traffic stops.

3. Limit on Security Deposits

  • If you're renting, here's a relief. Landlords can now charge only up to one month's rent as a security deposit, making it a bit easier on your wallet.

4. Extended Sick Leave

  • Taking care of your health just got a bit easier. Employers are now required to give at least five days of sick leave, ensuring you can take the time you need without worrying about your job.

5. Inclusive Healthcare Access

  • Healthcare is becoming more inclusive. Now, all undocumented immigrants, regardless of age, can qualify for Medi-Cal state health insurance. It's a step towards making sure everyone has access to essential health services.

6. Protection for Marijuana Users

  • There's a change in how businesses handle marijuana use. Unless you're a federal contractor or work in construction, businesses can't penalize you for using marijuana off-duty and away from the workplace.

7. California's Official State Mushroom

  • On another note, California now has an official state mushroom—the California Golden Chanterelle. A little touch of uniqueness to celebrate our state's natural wonders.

As with all laws, there are exceptions, please consult a lawyer before relying on the new laws. Stay informed, stay empowered. These new laws aim to make California a better place for everyone in 2024.

Here to make it right, when you’ve been wronged!
